Through her revolutionary haircare products for Black women, she built a business empire that empowered others and created economic opportunities. Submitted by our JAG Association, we honor Clementine Hunter, a self-taught folk artist who captured the culture and history of Southern life through her vibrant paintings. Born on a plantation in Louisiana, Hunter’s artwork depicted everyday experiences, preserving the stories of Black life in the early 20th century. Despite facing barriers, she became one of the most celebrated African American artists, proving that passion and creativity can break through any obstacle. Rising to fame as a singer and dancer in the 1920s, Baker shattered racial barriers in the entertainment industry. Beyond the stage, she used her influence to fight for racial equality and even worked as a spy for the French Resistance during WWII. Her legacy as an artist and activist continues to inspire generations worldwide. ✨🎭 Laissez les bons temps rouler! 🎭✨ Yesterday, MACA high school students in Mrs. Pitre’s and Mrs. Brower’s classes got a special treat—a deep dive into the History of Mardi Gras! 🎉 ULL graduate student and Public Historian Kallie Barron, who has worked with museums across the state, brought the culture to life with her expertise in Cajun studies.
